Accessibility
A public lab should be usable.
We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 AA across this website and to make the physical lab welcoming to everyone. Where we fall short, we want to know.
Conformance
This website is designed to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. We test with keyboard navigation, screen readers (NVDA and VoiceOver), zoom to 200%, and reduced-motion settings. The site is designed to work without JavaScript; interactive filters and search are enhancements, not requirements for reading the research.
What we have done
- Semantic landmarks, one main heading per page, and a visible skip link.
- Full keyboard access, visible focus indicators, and a mobile menu that traps focus and closes with Escape.
- Text and interface colours checked for contrast against the paper background.
- Illustrations carry descriptive alternative text; decorative diagrams are hidden from assistive technology and described in captions.
- Animations respect
prefers-reduced-motion; nothing autoplays audio or video. - Forms have persistent labels, clear error messages, and no time limits.
- Pages remain readable at 200% zoom and reflow to a single column on small screens.
Known limitations
- Some archival PDFs and figures may not be fully tagged. We will provide an accessible version on request.
- Images include descriptive alternative text where they convey information.
- The contact form opens your email application. If your device has no mail client configured, write to hello@ruqilab.org directly.
- The building's alley entrance has a 6 cm threshold. The Penn Avenue entrance is step-free; contact us and we will meet you there.
Physical access
The third floor is served by a freight elevator with a 90 cm door. Accessible toilets are on the second floor. A quiet room is available during Public Lab Night. Assistance dogs are welcome. We can provide large-print materials and a live captioner for talks with two weeks' notice.
Tell us
If you encounter a barrier, email access@ruqilab.org with the page address and what happened. We aim to acknowledge within two working days and to fix confirmed website issues within 30 days. If you need an accommodation for an event or visit, tell us what would help; we will not ask you to justify it.
If you are not satisfied with our response, you can raise the matter with the board at board@ruqilab.org.
